Using Python to unearth data and documents from APIs
Thursday April 3, 2025 2:30pm - 3:15pm EDT
Power up your ability to efficiently discover story leads and verify claims with basic Python commands and an understanding of how to explore the data offered in APIs. This session will demonstrate how to use programming code to search SEC filings, nonprofit disclosures and consumer complaint databases — practical techniques you can use to gather data at scale. No setup required, as we'll be walking through our sample analysis in a code notebook on our screen. Links will be provided so you can take this code home and adapt it to your own stories! This panel is in partnership with Investigative Reporters & Editors.

How R can supercharge your ability to easily gather and analyze stock market and economic data
Saturday April 5, 2025 9:00am - 9:45am EDT
We've all been there: trying to compare different companies' stock performance, or pulling together economic indicators such as mortage rates, GDP variants or unenmployment for the region you cover. If you've been compiling it manually every time, this session will demonstrate how to use some easy-to-understand R code and a package called tidyquant to make things much easier. What's more, you can re-use it every day, month, or quarter, so that you never have to start from scratch again when you need the latest numbers for a story. No setup or prior experience with R is required - the session will walk through a demonstration and then give you the code to take home to play with afterwards.
